What does a trip to the Dentist and BOTOX® have in Common?
Now they can be one in the same! In 2012, the Georgia Board of Dentistry began licensing Dentists, with approved training and licensure, to use Botox® and Injectable fillers (like Juvederm®) in their practice. For years, dentists have questioned why their field was not allowed to use these products in their daily practice. We, as dentists, give hundreds of injections weekly in the facial region, probably more than any other licensed practitioner in that area of the body. Who better to give the injections than a person who does thousands yearly!
BOTOX® is a manufactured injectable medication used therapeutically to reduce the strength of the targeted muscles. The active molecule is a highly refined purified protein. Yes, it binds to muscles, not the nerves; therefore, there will be no loss of sensation. While BOTOX® has definite cosmetic uses (treats forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet or “smile lines”), the bigger therapeutic benefit is that BOTOX® is also used to treat chronic MIGRAINES, their trigger points, TMJ pain, the gummy smile, and can be used to reduce the pain and harmful effects of clenching and grinding.
For many patients that suffer from clenching and grinding, the traditional nightguard (or occlusal guard) has been prescribed. However, this appliance can be cumbersome and unsightly to wear if the patient is in the public eye. BOTOX® has been a HUGE advance in this area, whereby the patient has the injection placed in a matter of a minute, and can have lasting relief for months!
JUVEDERM® (known as a dermal filler), is a temporary filler made of hyaluronic acid, a substance that exists naturally in all living organisms. Skin houses over 56% of hyaluronic acid in the body alone. As we age, we lose collagen and “fullness” to the oral area, resulting in “frown lines”, thinning of the lips, and “parenthesis around the face”. Fillers, like Juvederm, have a therapeutic benefit, as well, and are used in corners of the mouth where patients get tear troughs and are susceptible to infections, cracks, and bleeding.
Cosmetic and Therapeutic benefits of BOTOX® and JUVEDERM® are part of our daily practice in Buford. The administration of injectable pharmacologics of the gums, cheeks, jaws, lips and oral cavity can be utilized for cosmetic purposes and must be a component of a comprehensive treatment plan.
